Chess Camp

MARIN SCHOLASTIC CHESS CAMP

Instructors: Lanette Chan-Gordon and Jeff Gordon
Grades: K – 8

Are you looking for a camp that offers excitement , challenge, a chance to make new friends and is just plain old fun? Come to the Marin Scholastic Chess Summer Camp!

Learning chess facilitates children’s cognitive development and helps them acquire many useful skills. “Playing” chess provides children with opportunities to practice thinking, analyzing, planning, problem solving, decision-making, observing, concentrating, visualizing future possibilities and remembering and applying the lessons of past experiences to present circumstances.

Why Chess? In chess every turn is another problem to solve, another decision to make. The beauty of chess is that it stimulates children’s minds and helps them build valuable skills while they are engaged in an enjoyable activity. We try to make our chess activities as much fun as possible. When something is fun and interesting children enjoy the process and learn the material more quickly and easily. The happy result is that children who learn chess become better thinkers, problem solvers and more capable decision makers while they are having fun!

Snacks, Prizes and Outdoor Fun! In addition to lots of chess play, instruction and in class tournaments with trophies, the children will be able to take breaks outside on the playground at Bel Aire School. A fun giant chess set will be available along with computer chess games. Prizes, including Lanette’s yummy chocolate chess pieces, and snacks will be provided.

Lanette Chan-Gordon is a former member of the Board of Directors of Calchess, the Northern California Affiliate of the United States Chess Federation.
